Perplexity puts the private half of your task on your Mac

Perplexity's new Hybrid Compute keeps sensitive files and personal data on Apple silicon while the cloud handles the reasoning it doesn't need to see.

On 1 September 2026, Perplexity launched Hybrid Compute on Mac, a feature that splits a single task between the cloud and a local model running on the machine. The cloud still handles frontier reasoning, web search and planning; the on-device model handles private files, sensitive information and actions on the Mac itself.

The privacy gate is the interesting part. An on-device classifier scans for details such as names, addresses, account numbers and secrets before anything leaves the device, and can mask them, keep the step local, refuse the action or ask for consent. Perplexity reserves its strictest handling for credentials, payment card numbers and government IDs, and says it has open-sourced the classifier.

It runs on any Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later with at least 24GB of unified memory, and is included for Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers.

Why it matters: privacy has been the standing objection to cloud AI touching personal files. Routing the sensitive parts to a local model is a credible answer, and a direct challenge to on-device rivals.

What to watch next: whether the classifier holds up under scrutiny now that it is public, and whether Windows gets the same treatment.
