OpenAI is retiring ChatGPT Atlas, its AI browser, less than a year after launch

OpenAI is shutting down ChatGPT Atlas, the standalone AI browser it launched only in October 2025. The company confirmed on 9 July 2026 that Atlas will stop working on 9 August 2026, leaving users about a month to get out.

There is no automatic migration. Bookmarks, tabs, history and saved sessions will not transfer, so OpenAI is telling people to export anything they want to keep before the cut-off; existing ChatGPT conversations are unaffected. In place of a dedicated browser, OpenAI is folding the same capabilities into its other products — a new Chrome extension that adds page context, summaries and task hand-off, plus an upgraded ChatGPT desktop app with built-in browsing and a remote cloud browser for agent tasks.

The reasoning is consolidation. TechCrunch reported OpenAI’s leadership had moved to cut “side quests,” with the company concluding that “the browser is a feature, not the destination.”

Why it matters: the retreat is striking because AI browsers were one of 2025’s loudest bets — Perplexity shipped Comet and The Browser Company shipped Dia, while Google and Microsoft folded agentic AI into Chrome and Edge. OpenAI deciding a browser is a feature rather than a product is a real signal about where this category is heading.

What to watch next: whether rivals reach the same conclusion, or whether Perplexity’s Comet and the others double down while OpenAI steps back.
